Tillage is one of those jobs that eats a whole person for days at the worst possible time. Someone has to sit in the cab and drive in straight lines while ten other jobs pile up around the farm. John Deere's answer is to take the driver out of the biggest tractor it has ever built and let that person go do the other ten.
What is in Deere's second-generation autonomy kit
The Autonomous 9RX runs Deere's second-generation autonomy kit: 16 cameras in pods for a full 360-degree view, two Nvidia-powered vision processing units, and a StarFire GNSS receiver. Better depth perception lets it run about 40 percent faster and pull implements roughly twice as wide as the first-generation kit, according to Deere robotics director Matt Potter. It is built on the new 9RX four-track lineup, the 710, 770 and 830, topping out at 830 rated horsepower, the most powerful tractors the company has ever made.
The Autonomous 9RX retrofits onto tractors already in the shed
Deere did not make you buy a clean-sheet robot whole. The kit retrofits onto model-year 2022-and-newer 9R and 9RX tractors and 2020-and-newer 8R and 8RX, so the autonomy bolts onto iron a grower may already have working. Power comes from the 18-litre JD18 engine, Stage V compliant, meeting emissions through exhaust-gas recirculation so there is no diesel exhaust fluid to carry. Tillage is the first job it takes off your hands.
Where autonomous tillage still stops
There is a catch worth saying plainly. Autonomous tillage in an open field is a long way from a fully autonomous farm, and Deere knows it. CTO Jahmy Hindman frames the whole programme as a fix for chronic farm-labour shortages, and the stated destination is a fully autonomous corn-and-soybean system in the US by 2030. Revealed at CES 2025 alongside an orchard tractor, a dump truck and an electric mower, the 16-camera kit launched on a limited basis with full release scheduled for 2026.
Do not read the US dateline as the Australian one. The 9RX series is already working here through Hutcheon and Pearce, with early units running at Cleveland Agriculture near the NSW-Queensland border on wheat and chickpeas. The autonomy-ready models sell locally, and Deere has flagged its electric autonomous tractor for an Australian launch in 2026. For broadacre country a driverless 830hp rig is not a concept video. It is a machine arriving on the dealer floor.
